St. Louis Encephalitis

Historical Data

  • Cases of St. Louis Encephalitis are most common in the eastern and central states of the United States 

  • There are known cases in Kentucky and North Carolina and although there are no cases reported in Virginia it is very likely to spread to Virginia since St. Louis Encephalitis is found in Virginia’s border states

  • In southern states St. Louis Encephalitis can occur year round however it primarily occurs during the late summer to early fall in temperate areas

  • Between 2004-2013 there were 67 reported cases across the United States

  • Less than 15 percent of those infected with St. Louis Encephalitis will die

  • Most cases of St. Louis Encephalitis go undiagnosed

 

Symptoms

  • Symptoms occur quite rapidly after infection

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Dizziness

  • Malaise

  • Usually milder in children

  • Some patients will not recover after the initial infection and will develop neurological infections such as confusion, disorientation, coma, stiffness, and unsteadiness
